De sus 1130 km de largo 463 discurren en territorio ecuatoriano y 667 en territorio peruano a lo largo de cuatro distritos : Las Amazonas, Mazán, Napo y Torres Causana [provincia de Maynas]. Este río nuclea diversos procesos de intercambio social, económico, cultural, entre diversos pueblos, comúnmente apodados napuruna o kichwaruna. Los pueblos estudiados en este artículo son : "mestizos", kichwas, yaguas, murui-muinani y quechuas.
