Los curacas o caciques, que hasta entonces operaban intermediarios naturales entre indígenas y Estado, fueron sustituidos por autoridades elegidas llamadas "alcaldes de indios". Se analiza este fenómeno a partir de la insurrección de 1812, en Huánuco, que tuvo por cabecillas a los alcaldes. Movilizó varios partidos, generando según el virrey Abascal, "el punto más álgido de su Virreinato". Mientras los curacas de sangre van perdiendo su autoridad, las comunidades, encabezadas por los alcaldes, se convocan -paradójicamente- en nombre del "Rey Inca", así como los jefes criollos invocan aquella memoria para incitar la población a luchar. Esta rebelión traduce una ruptura del tejido social tradicional, y arroja luz sobre el papel de los nuevos actores y la fuerza de los símbolos. Title A name given to the resource Los últimos navegantes en balsas oceánicas : Testimonio de un balsero Description An account of the resource "Al iniciar una investigación histórica sobre las balsas oceánicas a vela que utilizaban indígenas de costas ecuatorianas y peruanas desde antes de la conquista hispánica, notamos que estás se habrían utilizado hasta la primera mitad del siglo XX, y decidimos buscar el testimonio de alguien que hubiese realizado esas travesías para conocer su experiencia : ¿Cómo eran hechas esas balsas, su gobierno, ruta y propósito de viajes? Tuvimos éxito al conocer un peruano de 94 años, de origen sechurano, que había participado de joven en travesías a Guayaquil.
