Parte de este trabajo consistió en realizar un diagnóstico socio-lingüístico de la comunidad de San Carlos, que estaba perdiendo el kichwa.  la convivencia con los miembros de la comunidad, así como las entrevistas sostenidas con algunos padres de familia y profesores, le permitieron observar que el kichwa se encontraba en un claro proceso de sustitución por el castellano.  Era necesario empezar a trabajar cuanto antes si se quería revertir la situación.  Así, se hizo evidente la necesidad de laborar una propuesta para que el kichwa no muera; es decir, una propuesta de revitalización lingüística.  Esta guía es resultado de esta preocupación.  Esperamos que pueda servir como herramienta para que los maestros trabajen en cada comunidad y puedan darle más uso a la lengua, evitando que se pierda para siempre."&#13;
