Title A name given to the resource El simio de Dios / Los indígenas y la Iglesia frente ala evangelización del Perú, siglos XVI - XVII Description An account of the resource La Iglesia puso reiteradamente en duda su labor de evangelización en el Perú, acusando a los indios de seguir siendo tan idólatras como antes y su catolicismo sólo una fachada hipócrita. La historiografía ha asumido esta justificación del poder colonial, que le permitió imponer su monopolio simbólico, como una verdad absoluta caracterizando la actitud de la población indígena ante la presencia occidental como una férrea resistencia religiosa. Si vemos de cerca los fenómenos religiosos que son reprimidos bajo el nombre de idolatrías encontramos que muchos de ellos no sólo están fuertemente inspirados por los ritos católicos, sino que son la expresión de una abierta voluntad de reproducirlos. Ante la imposibilidad de aceptar una autonomía religiosa católica indígena, la Iglesia se verá obligada a considerar estas expresiones como parodias demoníacas y a reinventar el pasado indígena.
