Estos territorios han ejercido desde tiempos precolombinos una atracción continua sobre los pueblos de regiones vecinas, cuyas invasiones provocaron una extrema disgregación de las primitivas poblaciones indígenas. Se cita una de las primeras expediciones europeas realizadas en estos lugares, la de Federmann en 1530, que se detuvo durante seis semanas en cuatro pueblos diferentes que no se comprendían entre ellos, por hablar lenguas distintas. "...Actualmente, en el oeste de Venezuela, en la ribera occidental del lago Maracaibo, sólo existen dos grupos indígenas : Los Guajiros y los Paraujanos, de origen arawak, en la península que lleva sus nombres, pueblos pastores y pescadores; y las tribus Motilones no sometidas, de origen caribe, en la región montañosa y de los bosques en la frontera colombiana.
