La melodía se basa en el villancico chachapoyano "Niño Manuelito" y el texto se acomoda a él mediante una línea hexasilábica o con alargamiento y supresión de sílabas. Además cantan en registro alto, con voz en falsetto, y emplean una bilabial vibrante múltiple para entonar la melodía. Se presentan quechuismos, entre los cuales "waka" se asocia con la acción de dar de comer a la wawa. Se propone que el villancico "Niño Manuelito" circuló en la red Ucayali-Amazonas debido al trabajo misional franciscano y a las migraciones forzadas del primer boom del caucho [1879-1912]; en que la melodía se reinterpretó como canto de cuna. "Niño Manuelito" se desarrolla a partir del villancico español decimonónico "Venid Pastorcillos".
