Title A name given to the resource A revisited history of cacao domestication in pre‑Columbian times revealed by archaeogenomic approaches Description An account of the resource Humans have a long history of transporting and trading plants, contributing to the evolution of domesticated plants. Theobroma cacao originated in the Neotropics from South America. However, little is known about its domestication and use in these regions. In this study, ceramic residues from a large sample of pre-Columbian cultures from South and Central America were analyzed using archaeogenomic and biochemical approaches. Here we show, for the first time, the widespread use of cacao in South America out of its native Amazonian area of origin, extending back 5000 years, likely supported by cultural interactions between the Amazon and the Pacific coast. We observed that strong genetic mixing between geographically distant cacao populations occurred as early as the middle Holocene, in South America, driven by humans, favoring the adaptation of T. cacao to new environments. This complex history of cacao domestication is the basis of today's cacao tree populations and its knowledge can help us better manage their genetic resources. // Los seres humanos tienen una larga historia de transporte y comercio de plantas, lo que ha contribuido a la evolución de las plantas domesticadas. El cacao Theobroma se originó en el Neotrópico de América del Sur. Sin embargo, se sabe poco sobre su domesticación y uso en estas regiones. En este estudio, se analizaron restos cerámicos de una gran muestra de culturas precolombinas de América del Sur y Central utilizando enfoques arqueogenómicos y bioquímicos. Aquí mostramos, por primera vez, el uso generalizado del cacao en América del Sur fuera de su área de origen amazónica nativa, que se remonta a 5000 años atrás, probablemente respaldado por interacciones culturales entre el Amazonas y la costa del Pacífico. Observamos que ya en el Holoceno medio se produjo una fuerte mezcla genética entre poblaciones de cacao geográficamente distantes, lo que favoreció la adaptación de T. cacao a nuevos entornos. Esta compleja historia de la domesticación del cacao es la base de las poblaciones actuales de árboles de cacao y su conocimiento puede ayudarnos a gestionar mejor sus recursos genéticos.
